Supreme Court refuse to issue stay order for Sharif sugar mills

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court has refused to issue a stay order against aLahore High Court order for the relocation of three Sharif family sugarmills.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian SaqibNisar is hearing the petition.

The CJP ordered to relocate illegal sugar mills to other areas.

Representatives of cane growers and counsel for the mills had told thebench that growers have been unable to sell their produce due to thesuspension of sugar mills’ operations. They had requested that the benchissue a stay order against the operation of the Lahore High Court order sothat the mills can resume crushing.

Aitezaz Ahsan, who is representing Jehangir Tareen, had, insisted that themills be relocated in line with the Lahore High Court’s verdict. He hadproposed that either the farmers be paid a premium ahead of the crushing orthat Tareen be allowed to buy the produce.

The chief justice said that he would daily hear the matter in his chamberuntil a solution was found for the growers. Justice Nisar asked Ahsan tosubmit his proposals in writing.
