The Prosecutor General of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Justice (retd) Syed Asghar Haider, tendered his resignation from his position, citing "personal engagements,". This development has significant implications for the NAB's ongoing investigations and proceedings. Asghar Haider's term was originally scheduled to conclude in February 2024, making his departure unexpected.

Inside sources have disclosed that the NAB had already wrapped up its investigation into the high-profile 190 million pounds scandal, and a reference related to this case was set to be submitted in court this month. However, Asghar Haider's resignation has left the NAB unable to proceed with filing the reference without his approval, creating a considerable obstacle in the legal process.

Moreover, the absence of the prosecutor general has thrown into uncertainty the scheduling of executive board meetings and the approval of pending cases. His consent was also a prerequisite for the reinstatement of cases following the Supreme Court's striking down of NAB amendments.

It is worth noting that the previous PTI government had granted Asghar Haider a three-year extension through the promulgation of an ordinance, making his resignation even more unexpected in the political and legal landscape
