Zainab Abbas, a renowned sports presenter celebrated for her efforts tofoster “cultural similarities” between Pakistan and India, has reportedlydeparted from India due to ‘safety concerns,’ following accusations ofmaking ‘anti-Hindu’ statements on social media.
She had been in India to cover the ICC World Cup, but her stay took anunexpected turn when an Indian lawyer lodged a complaint against her, claiming she had made derogatory remarks on social media platforms directedat India and the Hindu religion.
Zainab Abbas vehemently denies these allegations and insists that she hasbeen unjustly singled out. Amidst the controversy, the InternationalCricket Council (ICC) has become entangled, with suggestions that it wasunable to prevent her deportation due to perceived “Indian propaganda.”Supporters close to Zainab argue that she has been wrongly accused and thather past social media activity, dating back several years, was taken out ofcontext.
They assert that her earlier tweets were unrelated to her role as a sportspresenter and should not have led to her expulsion from India. As of now,the ICC has not issued an official statement on the matter.
Currently, Zainab Abbas is situated in Dubai, away from the ongoingdispute. It is worth noting that the Indian lawyer Vineet Jindal officiallyfiled a complaint against Zainab Abbas concerning a series of old tweetsthat resurfaced on X, formerly known as Twitter.
These tweets are alleged to contain content that is regarded as”anti-Hindu” in nature. The situation remains tense as debates surroundingfreedom of expression and the consequences of social media posts continueto evolve in the modern world.
