Three Injured in Times Square Shooting as NYPD Arrests Teenage Suspect

Three people were injured in a shooting at New York’s Times Square, the New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed on Saturday.

The victims — an 18-year-old woman, a 19-year-old man, and a 65-year-old man — were taken to hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. Police have taken a 17-year-old male into custody and recovered a firearm from the scene.

According to the NYPD, the incident occurred at approximately 1:20 a.m. ET (10:20 a.m. PKT) following a verbal dispute involving one of the victims. Authorities have not yet determined whether the suspect and the victims were acquainted.

The shooting, which took place at one of New York’s most famous tourist destinations, follows a high-profile incident in July when four people — including a senior Blackstone executive and an NYPD officer — were killed in a Manhattan office tower attack.

While mass shootings remain a frequent occurrence in the United States due to the widespread availability of firearms, New York City had recorded record-low shooting incidents and victims in the first seven months of this year, according to police data released on August 4.

Crime remains a central issue ahead of November’s mayoral elections in America’s largest city.
