US to enhance strategic partnership with Afghanistan: Ambassador

KABUL – The new US Ambassador to Afghanistan John R. Bass says the UnitedStates continues to support the country and strengthen its strategicpartnership with the Afghan government, TOLO News has reported.

In a video message, the US envoy said his country will continue its effortsto ensure peace and stability in Afghanistan and fight the endemiccorruption in the country.

“Our work is often challenging, but when we face it together, we succeed. Iam committed to strengthening our strategic partnership to improve peaceand security to increasing trade and economic development and to fightingcorruption and narcotics trafficking,” he said.

“I am also committed to supporting Afghans to promote education, genderequality, human rights and the rule of law.”

Bass succeeds US Special Chargé d’Affaires, Ambassador Hugo Llorens, whocompleted his assignment on November 16.

Bass most recently served as Ambassador to the Republic of Turkey(2012-2017) and Ambassador to Georgia (2009-2012).

His previous assignments have included positions in US missions in Iraq,Italy, Belgium, and Chad as well as service on Vice President Dick Cheney’sstaff, as Chief of Staff and Advisor to Deputy Secretary of State StrobeTalbott, and as the Executive Secretary for the Department of State andDirector of the State Department’s Operations Center.
