Negotiations with IMF on electricity relief ongoing

Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Murtaza Solangi,announced on Thursday that discussions with the International Monetary Fund(IMF) are currently in progress regarding relief measures for electricitybills. The minister disclosed that significant decisions in this regardwere made during the recent Cabinet meeting, chaired by Caretaker PrimeMinister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar.

Prime Minister Kakar had instructed relevant stakeholders to engage inconsultations with the IMF, a process that is presently ongoing. Theminister also mentioned that the details of the relief plan for electricitybills would become clear in the coming days. Furthermore, he emphasizedthat various energy-saving measures were being contemplated to address theongoing energy crisis, which involves multiple contributing factors.

Solangi acknowledged that the caretaker government possessed limitedauthority, a specific mandate, and a temporary tenure. Despite theseconstraints, he stressed the importance of cooperation from all politicalparties in ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections in the country.Solangi affirmed that their role was not to criticize but to activelycontribute to resolving issues.

He pledged the caretaker government’s full support to the ElectionCommission of Pakistan in conducting the elections as scheduled. Solangireiterated their commitment to upholding the Constitution and safeguardingthe rights of peaceful protest and freedom of expression. In response to aquery, he cited Article 218(3) of the Constitution, which grants theElection Commission the authority to organize free, fair, and impartialelections, and reaffirmed the caretaker government’s commitment toassisting in this endeavor.
