ISLAMABAD – Several of Facebook’s official Instagram and Twitter accountswere hacked yesterday by the same group that hacked ESPN and the NFL’ssocial media accounts last month. The hacker group then posted an ad fortheir security services while putting Twitter to shame.
Known as OurMine, the group hacked a dozen accounts in an attempt to exposecyber vulnerabilities. The tweets were posted multiple times before theywere deleted. The compromised accounts were restored in less than 30minutes but the incident highlighted clear vulnerabilities.
Soon afterward, Twitter released a statement saying:
As soon as we were made aware of the issue we locked the compromisedaccounts and are working closely with our partners at Facebook to restorethem.
Twitter also confirmed that the accounts were hacked using a third partyplatform Khoros, which is used by businesses to manage their social mediaaccounts.
The hacker group originates from Dubai and has hacked several high profileaccounts including Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, Google CEO Sundar Pichaiand more.
