During the Pakistan-Netherlands World Cup match, an unusual sporting incident occurred when an over ended with only five deliveries bowled due to a miscount by umpires Adrian Holdstock and Chris Brown.

In the 14th over, Saud Shakeel scored a boundary on the fifth delivery, but the umpires mistakenly believed that all six deliveries had been bowled. Since the third umpire, Rod Tucker, did not intervene, the five-ball over was upheld in accordance with the International Cricket Council (ICC) rules.

This rule, as stated in the "Men’s One Day International Playing Conditions" rule 17.5.1, dictates that if the umpire miscounts the number of valid balls, the over count as determined by the umpire stands.

A similar error occurred eight overs later when Shakeel hit a delivery from Roelof van der Merwe for a boundary. Shakeel and Rizwan promptly alerted the umpires to the fact that the Netherlands had one extra fielder positioned outside the fielding circle.
