LHC announces verdict in Asad Umar contempt of court case

The Rawalpindi Bench of Lahore High Court (LHC) Wednesday disposed of acontempt of court case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader AsadUmar after the latter unconditionally apologised to the court.

Asad Umar appeared before the court along with his lawyer Chaudhary FaisalAdvocate.

“Produce your client. Where is he?” Justice Jawad Hassan said to FaisalChaudhry. Upon this, Asad Umar came to the rostrum and apologisedunconditionally to the court for his speech.

“My intention was not to target any judge or judiciary. We respect thejudiciary and will continue doing so. I apologise if my speech crossed theline,” he said.

“Courts allowed your long march, [but] you levelled allegations against thecourts. The problem is not the contempt of court. It is about theaccusations against institutions and personalities,” Justice Jawad Hassanremarked.

“There was no mentioning of a judge in my speech,” Asad Umar replied.

“The court has your video statement. Do you know what you said in thespeech? Article 50 and 60 of the Constitution allows the right todemocracy. The Constitution allows the right to movement but not tocriticise institutions,” Justice Jawad stated.

The court, however, disposed of the contempt of court case against AsadUmar after an unconditional apology from him.
