WASHINGTON – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had received a letter fromCongress urging him to raise human rights issues and construction of dam inPakistan with the foreign minister, ahead of his arrival in Washington,media has reported.
The letter jointly written and signed by as many as five members of theCongress asking the Secretary to raise specifically two issues: enforceddisappearances in Sindh and the construction of dams along the Indus Riverwithout Sindh’s consent.
The signatories also identified themselves as members of the CongressionalSindh Caucus and expressed concerns saying, “The worst human rights abusesin Sindh are the continued enforced disappearances.”
The United Nations Human Rights Committee defines enforced disappearancesas an arrest or detention by state officials followed by a refusal toacknowledge the person’s fate or whereabouts.
