Babar Azam, the prolific right-hander from Pakistan, is set to make hisreturn to the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) for the first time since2017. He has been signed by Rangpur Riders, and the franchise chose aunique way to announce this signing on their social media platforms.
In a post on their official Facebook account, Rangpur Riders shared thenews with their fans, saying, “We are here with another surprise aftersigning the world’s No. 1 all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan in the fight forvictory! Dear Rangpur Riders fans, guess who is going to be the new riderby matching the information given in the picture, and share your opinion inthe comments.”
When Babar last participated in the BPL, he played for Sylhet Sixers. Theannouncement post included an image titled ‘Guess the rider,’ providinghints such as ‘he made his ODI debut in 2015,’ ‘He’s the first player toscore more than 5000 runs in his first 100 ODI innings,’ and ‘He’s thecaptain of currently ranked world’s no. 1 ODI team,’ which immediatelyconfirmed that Azam had joined the team.
It’s worth noting that Pakistan pacer Ihsanullah will also be part of theRangpur Riders for the 2024 edition of BPL. Recently, Babar Azam achieved aremarkable feat by becoming the fastest captain to reach 2000 ODI runs injust 31 innings, breaking the previous record held by Kohli, who achievedthis in 36 innings. This milestone was accomplished during the Pakistan vs.Bangladesh match in the Asia Cup 2023 at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.
Since his debut against Zimbabwe in 2015, Azam has transformed thefortunes of Pakistan cricket. The team, once plagued by batting failures,has now become a match-winning outfit. Azam’s leadership not only propelledPakistan to the number one ranking in ODIs but also saw him consistentlyexcel with the bat, breaking several records along the way, with moremilestones yet to be achieved.
