Top international economist Atif Mian breaks silence over issue of his resignation

ISLAMABAD – Top international economist Atif Mian has broken silence overhis resignation from the Economic Advisory Council of Pakistan.

He said on Friday that he has resigned from the Economic Advisory Council“for the sake of stability of the government of Pakistan” which was facinga lot of adverse pressure on his appointment.

The appointment of Atif Mian, who belongs to the minority Ahmadiyyacommunity, had sparked a controversy with some religious groups calling forthe resignation of Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry for defending thegovernment decision.

However, the information minister took to the popular micro-blogging siteTwitter on Friday to announce the government decision to withdraw thenomination of Atif Mian, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology-educatedPakistani-American economics professor at the prestigious PrincetonUniversity.

Another PTI leader Faisal Javed Khan said the government asked Atif Mian tostep down from the Economic Advisory Council and he has agreed.
