At least seven people were injured on Thursday after a fire broke out at a garment factory in Karachi’s Export Processing Zone (KEPZ) near Landhi, leading to a partial building collapse, officials confirmed. Rescue operations were ongoing at the time of reporting.
“Rescue teams transported the injured to a nearby hospital via Edhi ambulances,” said a spokesperson for Rescue 1122. “The fire is still raging, and efforts to extinguish it continue with full intensity.”
A total of four ambulances, six fire brigade vehicles, and a snorkel were dispatched to the scene alongside emergency response teams shortly after the incident was reported.
Fires in industrial areas remain a frequent hazard in Karachi due to a lack of adequate fire safety infrastructure in many buildings.
An investigation into the cause of the latest blaze is currently underway.
This is not the first such incident at the KEPZ. In June, a massive fire raged for over 36 hours, completely destroying three factories and injuring five people, including four firefighters. A similar fire in April resulted in no casualties, but several individuals were treated for smoke inhalation as 12 fire tenders worked for hours to bring the situation under control.
