*New Delhi, August 7, 2025* – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hasissued his first public comments following the United States PresidentDonald Trump’s decision to impose a steep 50% tariff on Indian goods, amove that has sent shockwaves through diplomatic and trade circles acrossboth nations.
Addressing the media during a press briefing in New Delhi, Prime MinisterModi called the tariff hike “unilateral and counterproductive,” stressingthat such protectionist measures would harm global supply chains and hurtconsumers on both sides. “India has always believed in fair, rules-basedtrade,” Modi stated. “We are reviewing all aspects of this tariff decisionand will take steps in India’s best interest.”
The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid growing concerns within India’sexport sector, which is bracing for significant losses due to the elevatedtariff walls.
