IHC announces verdict on petition seeking CJP consultation on appointment of Chairman NAB

*The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has a petition seeking inclusion of ChiefJustice of Pakistan (CJP) in the consultation process for the appointmentof the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairperson.*

Chief Justice Athar Minallah heard the petition against the appointment ofthe NAB chief and declared the petition non-maintainable, saying that thecourt cannot give directions to the Parliament.

The petition was filed by a citizen named Muhammad Fahad. The petitionermaintained that the Supreme Court had ordered that amendments should bemade in Section 6 of the NAB Ordinance and the CJP should be consulted onthe appointment.

Petitioner’s counsel said that the decision of the Supreme Court was notimplemented.

Chief justice remarked that the judgement that the petitioner was referringto was only an observation, not a verdict. Many judgements have been madesince then, the chief justice said.

“The appointment of the NAB chairman is the prerogative of the Parliament,”he added.
