PM Imran Khan held important telephonic conversation with British PM Boris Johnson

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan held a telephonic conversation withhis British counterparty Boris Johnson on Monday.

The two leaders exchanged views on the current trajectory of bilateralrelations, the Afghan peace process, the Covid-19 Pandemic, climate changeand travel ban.

PM Khan thanked Boris Johnson for his thoughtful video message for theWorld Environment Day event held in Islamabad on 5 June 2021.

He expressed the hope that Pakistan and the UK would be able to forge aneven stronger partnership going forward, particularly in the domains oftrade and investments. The two leaders agreed on the importance of highlevel exchanges between the two countries.

He lauded efforts of Prime Minister Boris Johnson in effectively combatingCovid-19 pandemic in the UK. He also briefed his British counterpart onmeasures taken by Pakistan to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic while savinglives, securing livelihoods, and stimulating the economy.

Imran Khan also impressed upon the UK to revisit the decision of placingPakistan on Red List of travel ban countries.

On Afghanistan, he reiterated Pakistan’s support for an Afghan-led andAfghan-owned peace and reconciliation process, adding that there was nomilitary solution to the conflict in Afghanistan and that a negotiatedpolitical solution was the only way forward.

Underscoring the importance of a responsible withdrawal, the Prime Ministerapprised his British counterpart of Pakistan’s on-going efforts to supportthe Afghan peace process, as part of a shared responsibility.

He also apprised Boris Johnson of the progress made by Pakistan tostrengthen its AML/CFT framework. He urged that the members of the FATFshould recognize Pakistan’s achievements in complying with FATF benchmarks.

The two sides agreed to continue to work together to further strengthenrelations and advance the common objective of regional and global peace andstability.
