MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned of global catastropheif the United States keeps dismantling an international arms control regime.
Speaking to heads of international news agencies at an economic forum inSaint Petersburg, he said the United States shows no genuine interest inconducting talks on extending the New START treaty which caps the number ofnuclear warheads well below the Cold War limits.
Putin said Russia is prepared to drop the nuclear weapons treaty with theUnited States if no one feels to extend it.

The treaty was signed by US President Barack Obama and his Russiancounterpart Dmitry Medvedev in Prague in 2010 and it expires in 2021.
