Sher Afzal Marwat, the lawyer representing former Prime Minister Imran Khan, made a plea before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday. He requested the court to transfer Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan from Attock jail to Adiala jail due to concerns regarding the unsatisfactory conditions prevailing at Attock jail.
During the hearing, Marwat highlighted the dire situation at Attock jail where Imran Khan is currently incarcerated. He emphasized the lack of basic amenities and the overall poor conditions within the prison.
Marwat informed the court of the presence of a pest infestation in the area where Imran Khan is being detained. Additionally, he pointed out that the cell housing Khan lacks a proper roof. Furthermore, Marwat argued that Attock jail does not provide the necessary B-class facility required for his client's status.
Contrary to the officials' claims that Imran Khan's placement in Attock jail is due to security concerns, Marwat contested, stating that Adiala jail is a more secure option. He stressed their right to access a B-class facility for Imran Khan and urged the court to consider relocating the former prime minister to the Rawalpindi facility.
Imran Khan had received a five-year prison sentence after being convicted in the Toshakhana case the previous month. Despite the IHC's decision to suspend his sentence on September 2, Imran Khan remains in custody due to his rearrest on August 19 in the "Cipher case." The PTI has consistently advocated for "A-Class" facilities for their chairman and has filed petitions with the IHC on this matter, arguing that Imran Khan's social and political status, education, and accustomed living standards entitle him to such privileges under Pakistan Prison Rules.
