ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court was informed on Tuesday that a 'mafia' operates the human smuggling ring in the country.
Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar was conducting today the hearing of the suo motu case on human smuggling.
After appearing in court on a moment's notice, the chief justice thanked the interior and foreign secretaries for their swift presence.
Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua informed the court that a mafia is involved in human smuggling in the country, adding that the affected areas include Jhelum, Kharian, Mandi Bahauddin Gujrat and Sialkot.
During the hearing, the chief justice remarked that some are claiming that the apex court is interfering in matters of governance.
Earlier, the chief justice observed that human smuggling gangs are operating from Gujrat, Lala Musa, Sira-e-Alamgir and Mandi Bahauddin areas of Punjab, adding that this menace has to be curtailed.
The crime is not being tackled adequately as there are issues of coordination between government institutions, he observed further.
Federal Investigation Agency Director General Bashir Ahmed Memon admitted before the court that human smuggling is a pressing issue in Gujranwala.
The chief justice stated that the court will direct the Punjab government to set up an FIA office in Gujranwala and Gujrat to tackle the situation on ground.
