Federal government clips powers of HEC

The federal government has decided to limit the authority of the HigherEducation Commission (HEC).

The cabinet committee for legislation has given nod for the amendments inthe HEC laws. According to the proposed amendments, the status of thefederal minister will be taken back from the HEC chairman.

The laws of HEC will be approved by the ministry of education, while theexecutive director of the Higher Education Commission will also beappointed by the government.

The amendments will be presented before the federal cabinet for finalapproval, the sources said.

On December 4, the Higher Education Commission invited innovative start-upsowned by students, alumni, faculty members, or researchers from public orprivate sector universities to apply for the Innovator Seed Fund (ISF)Grant.

In a statement, the HEC noted that Innovator Seed Fund (ISF) Grant –envisioned for the development of innovation and start-up ecosystem inPakistan – is a flagship initiative of the commission under the HigherEducation Development in Pakistan Project (HEDP).
