A meeting chaired by the Adviser for Prime Minister on Commerce Abdul RazakDawood, here on Monday, decided to give a befitting reply to India’s claimof Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Basmati Rice in the European Union(EU) market. It was also decided that Pakistan will file its opposition inthe EU, a press release issued by Ministry of Commerce said.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Commerce, Intellectual PropertyOrganization (IPO-Pakistan) Chairman, representatives of Rice ExportersAssociation of Pakistan (REAP) and the legal fraternity.——————————
During the meeting, REAP representatives were of the view that Pakistan isa major grower and producer of Basmati Rice and India’s claim forexclusivity is unjustified.
The adviser categorically stated that Pakistan will vehemently opposeIndia’s application in the European Union (EU) and restrain India fromobtaining an exclusive GI tag of Basmati Rice. He further supported theconcerns of REAP and relevant stakeholders and ensured that their claim forBasmati rice as GI will be protected.
India submitted an application in the European Union claiming soleownership of Basmati Rice, falsely misrepresenting its exclusivity.
