In a major boost, Indian Navy launches stealth Scorpene class submarine

NEW DELHI – Indian Navy’s fourth stealth Scorpene class Submarine Vela wason Monday launched for trials at the Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.

Indian Navy’s fourth stealth Scorpene class Submarine Vela of Project 75has been launched today at the Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.

Vela is the fourth of the six Scorpene submarine that has completed the outfittings at MDL.

*Key points to note:*

– A contract between French DCNS, and Mazgaon Dock Limited under IndianNavy’s Project-75 was signed in 2005 for the supply of six submarines.

– The remaining two submarines in the country’s Scorpene Submarineprogramme are Vagir and Vagsheer, both of which are currently in theadvanced stages of manufacturing at MDL.

– The first Scorpene class submarine INS Kalvari was commissioned into theIndian Navy, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 14 December 2017. Thesecond Scorpene class submarine Khanderi was launched in January 2017 whilethe third INS Karanj was launched on 31 January 2018.

– INS Khanderi and INS Karanj are in the advanced stages to join the Navyfleet.
