politics away from forces

ISLAMABAD: Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR)Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry on Thursday delivered a stronglyworded press conference in which he declared that the state of Pakistanstands above any individual and warned that one person’s unchecked personalambitions have reached a level where he believes “if not me, then nothing,”rendering him a direct threat to national security.

Addressing journalists at General Headquarters, the military’s spokespersonextended congratulations to all stakeholders on the formal appointment ofthe Chief of Defence Forces and announced that the headquarters of the newtri-services command has commenced operations. He described theestablishment of the CDF headquarters as a long-overdue requirement forenhanced coordination among the armed forces.

Lieutenant General Chaudhry stated that the primary purpose of the pressbriefing was to highlight an internal national security threat. “There isnothing greater than the state of Pakistan,” he emphasised, adding that oneindividual’s desires have escalated to the point where he openly proclaims”if I am not there, then nothing exists.” He asserted that politics forthis individual has effectively ended and he has now transformed into anational security threat by collaborating with external elements.

The DG ISPR underlined that the Pakistan Armed Forces do not represent anypolitical ideology. “We are the armed forces of Pakistan and reflect nopolitical thought,” he said, warning that any attack on the militarymotivated by personal political agenda would be met with a response. Whilethe armed forces respect the country’s political leadership, he insistedthat the military must be kept away from political controversies and no onewould be permitted to create divisions between the armed forces and thepeople.

Coming from middle and lower-middle class backgrounds, military personnelcannot tolerate attacks on the institution or its leadership, thespokesperson maintained. He welcomed constructive criticism of the armedforces but made it clear that inciting the public against the militarywould not be allowed. “Anyone who attacks our forces or leadership – doeshe want to create space for another army?” he questioned, adding that theindividual in question consistently pushes an anti-state and anti-militarynarrative in meetings while disregarding the Constitution, law, and rules.

The military spokesperson reiterated that all political personalities andparties are respected but urged them to conduct their politics withoutdragging the armed forces into it.
