Tusnami advisory issued after earthquake of magnitude 6.6

Japan has issued a tsunami advisory of approximately one meter for theislands situated off the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula. This advisorycame in response to an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 thatoccurred around 11 a.m. near Torishima Island, as reported by the JapanMeteorological Agency.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean, approximately550 kilometers (340 miles) south of Tokyo.

Tsunamis are immense waves generated by seismic activity or volcaniceruptions beneath the ocean’s surface.

While these tsunami waves remain relatively low in height in the deepocean, they gradually gain height as they approach and move inland, withocean depth decreasing along the way.
