Supreme Court s verdict on petition against Pervaiz Elahi s arrest

The Supreme Court, on Thursday, indefinitely postponed the hearing of apetition regarding the arrest of former Punjab chief minister ChaudhryParvez Elahi.

A three-member bench, led by Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, presided over thecase. During the proceedings, the court raised a question about where itwas specified in the law that an accused should not be arrested under anycircumstances.

The apex court noted that a court in Islamabad had issued an order allowingthe arrest of the accused with its approval, prompting the court to ponderwhether the courts were granting a license to the accused for committingcrimes.

Justice Tariq emphasized that judges had taken an oath to uphold the lawand inquired whether the police sought permission before arresting anyaccused.

Advocate Sardar Latif Khosa commented on the absurdity of re-arresting aperson after their release in one case. Justice Sardar Tariq soughtclarification on what the law had to say about this matter.

The lawyer requested the court for some time to prepare the case, which thebench accepted. Subsequently, the court adjourned the hearing indefinitely.
