The verdict on a petition filed by Imran Khan, the PTI chief and formerprime minister, challenging amendments in the NAB (National AccountabilityBureau) law, has been reserved by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. ChiefJustice of Pakistan, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, has expressed his intentionto deliver a concise and timely ruling, as he approaches his retirement.

A three-member bench, led by Chief Justice Bandial and including JusticeIjazul Ahsan and Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, presided over the finalarguments in this matter. During the proceedings, Chief Justice Bandialcommented on the withdrawal of references, indicating the direction inwhich the law appeared to lean. Furthermore, he mentioned the court’sdecision not to take suo motu notice, a practice it had engaged inpreviously.

The federal government’s lawyer, Makhdoom Ali Khan, presented the argumentthat the NAB law had been endorsed by the Supreme Court in the pastconcerning military officers, but it remained silent regarding judges. Heemphasized the lack of a proper forum for addressing complaints againstretired judges, who continued to write judgments for six months afterretirement.
