WASHINGTON – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has emphasized the importantrole Pakistan could play in bringing about a negotiated peace inAfghanistan, and conveyed the need for Pakistan to take sustained anddecisive measures against terrorists and militants threatening regionalpeace and stability.
This was stated by US State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert in adeclaration after the talks with Pakistani authorities in Islamabad onWednesday.
Secretary Michael R Pompeo met today in Islamabad with Pakistani PrimeMinister Imran Khan, and other civilian and military leadership. He wasaccompanied by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen Joseph F Dunford,Jr.
Congratulating Prime Minister Imran Khan on the formation of hisgovernment, the secretary welcomed the further strengthening of civilianinstitutions.
Secretary Pompeo also highlighted the importance of the US-Pakistanrelationship, and underscored areas of shared interest, such as theexpansion of two-way trade and commercial ties.
While meeting with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Secretary Pompeodiscussed the potential for the United States and Pakistan to work togetherto advance joint priorities, including regional peace and stability.
He also emphasized the value of strong people-to-people ties between ournations, built on decades of cultural and educational exchanges. During hismeeting with Pakistani Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa,Secretary Pompeo welcomed the smooth transition of power to a new civiliangovernment, stressing the importance of strong democratic institutions.
