ISLAMABAD – A former judge of India’s Supreme Court said on Tuesday thatPakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan deserves Nobel Peace Prize for hisstatesman-like approach in the face of heightened tensions between Pakistanand India.
“Pakistan and India are poor countries, who cannot afford a war,” Justice(retd) Markandey Katju said, while speaking to anchorperson, Hamid Mir, onGeo News show ‘Capital Talk’.
He said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was creating an atmosphere ofwar due to elections in his country.
Tensions between India and Pakistan reached an all-time high followingIndian incursions into Pakistani airspace and subsequent downing of twoIndian warplanes and capture of an Indian Air Force pilot, Wing CommanderAbhinandan Varthaman.
PM Khan, in his address to a joint session of Parliament last week,announced to release Wing Commander Abhinandan as a “gesture of peace”towards India, earning him praise from celebrities, journalists, diplomatsand the common public, who admired his brave and bold move in the favour ofmaintaining peace in the region and possibly avoiding an all-out war withIndia, the consequences of which could be disastrous.
