KABUL – There have been an estimated 147,124 deaths in Afghanistan, 64,942in Pakistan, post 9/11 reveals a new report.
According to the report, the post-9/11 wars have imposed a profound humancost on Americans: “Nearly 7,000 US” military fatalities and “more than53,700” injuries.”
The war in Afghanistan has reportedly killed an estimated 2,272 Americantroops and left 20,412 wounded while the conflict in Iraq has resulted inthe death of at least 4,483 others and injury of 32,253, the most recentPentagon figures show.
In 2017, the Brown University study found that by the end of 2018, theUnited States was scheduled to have spent nearly $6 trillion ongovernment-wide costs of the war on terror since 2001.
The estimated cost amounts to about $23,386 per individual Americantaxpayer, which is more than three times the amount ($7,740) calculated bythe Pentagon.
US President Donald Trump’s administration has intensified efforts toconvince the Taliban to engage in peace negotiations with the Afghangovernment, making the “political reconciliation” between the two partiesthe primary goal of its strategy to end the more than 17-year-old war.
In Iraq, however, there are no plans to withdraw the nearly 5,000 Americantroops fighting ISIS. The Trump administration has announced plans to pullout from Syria.
The Trump administration has denied reports of a US military withdrawalfrom Afghanistan.
