In a State Department media briefing on Tuesday, it was stated that the global Khalistan Referendum campaign, managed by the advocacy group "Sikhs For Justice" and involving tens of thousands of Sikhs in the US, is safeguarded by the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

When asked about Washington's stance on this campaign, given India's criticism, the spokesperson refrained from commenting on specifics but noted that campaigns like the Khalistan Referendum enjoy protection under US laws.

He emphasized that individuals have the right to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly in the United States, aligning with the First Amendment and adhering to applicable federal and local regulations.

This discussion followed the controversy surrounding the assassination of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar by Indian government agents in Canada's largest Gurdwara in British Columbia.
