Pakistan US ties: Ice breaks between two strained allies

WASHINGTON – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has given positive signalsregarding future Pakistan and US relations.

It seems that gradually ice is breaking between Pakistan and United Statesover strained ties that emerged from a new year tweet from President DonaldTrump.

US Secretary of State on Wednesday expressed his desire to work withPakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led (PTI) government.

In a statement issued on Wednesday following a meeting between the USSecretary of State and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Pompeo saidthat the US wishes to work with Islamabad.

He said that Pakistan can play an important role in the resolution ofAfghan dispute, adding that the Afghan Taliban shouldn’t waste opportunityfor dialogues.

The US Secretary of State went on to say that peace and stability in SouthAsia is in the interest of both Pakistan and the US.

Pak-US dialogues should continue for the resolution of regional issues andjoint interests of both countries.

On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi met US Secretaryof State Michael R Pompeo at the State Department and discussed bilateraland regional issues of mutual interest.

The foreign minister was assisted by Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua andAmbassador of Pakistan to the United States Ali Jehangir Siddiqui.
