ISLAMABAD – Hearing a case on the promotions of the employees of PakistanSteel Mills on Thursday, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmedhinted at the ordering the closure of the mill.
During the hearing, Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed remarked that no wrongdoingcan be done without the concurrence of the management. “Remove all officersand then start sacking the employees,” the top judge said.
He also remarked that the management of the Pakistan Steel Mills isresponsible for its downfall. said that mills that have been closed don’tneed a managing director or CEO. “These offices are nothing but a burden onthe national treasury,” he remarked.
The chief justice hinted that the court will close down the mills if themanagement refuses to improve their performance. He remarked that a shortorder will be issued later in the day.
The apex court has summoned Federal Planning Minister Asad Umar,Privatisation Minister Muhammad Mian Soomro, Industry and ProductionMinister Muhammad Hammad Azhar, and the secretaries of these departments inthe case.
On June 3, the Economic Coordination Committee approved firing allemployees of the Pakistan Steel Mills. A Rs20 billion package has beenprepared for the employees and each of them will be given at least Rs2.3million as golden handshake
