ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister Rana Sanaullah has declared that theappointment of Vice Chief of Army Staff will only be considered after theChief of Defence Forces assumes office and that even the name of the ViceChief will be proposed by the Chief of Defence Forces at his solediscretion.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, the senior PML-N leader and Advisor tothe Prime Minister on Political Affairs asserted that the post of ViceChief of Army Staff falls entirely under the prerogative of theyet-to-be-appointed Chief of Defence Staff. He maintained that the Chief ofDefence Forces alone will decide whether he requires a deputy and, if so,will himself nominate the officer for the position.
Defence observers point out that the position of Vice Chief of Army Staffhas historically been filled through internal army promotions and remains astatutory appointment under the Pakistan Army Act.
