China warns Afghanistan After Five Nationals Slain in cross border terrorism

ISLAMABAD: China has issued a stern protest to the Islamic Emirate ofAfghanistan following the killing of five Chinese nationals in a series ofcross-border attacks launched from Afghan territory into Tajikistan,marking a sharp escalation in regional security tensions.

The Chinese Embassy in Kabul confirmed that Ambassador Zhao Xing heldurgent talks with the acting Deputy Minister for Political Affairs of theIslamic Emirate, Dr Mohammad Naeem, during which Beijing conveyed itsprofound concern over the deteriorating security situation along theAfghanistan-Tajikistan border and the deliberate targeting of Chinesecitizens.

Tajik authorities have attributed the deadly assaults to militant groupsoperating from bases inside Afghanistan, stating that the attacks occurredover recent days and resulted in the deaths of five Chinese workers engagedin regional projects. Dushanbe has described the incidents as a directthreat to stability across Central Asia and beyond.

The killings have heightened anxieties in Beijing, which maintainsextensive economic interests in both Afghanistan and Tajikistan under theBelt and Road Initiative framework. Chinese officials have repeatedlyemphasised that the safety of its nationals remains a non-negotiablepriority.

Sources familiar with the diplomatic exchange indicate that Ambassador Zhaopressed the Islamic Emirate leadership to fulfil its internationalcommitments by preventing Afghan soil from being used for terroristactivities against neighbouring states and foreign personnel. The meetingunderscored China’s expectation of immediate and concrete measures todismantle cross-border militant networks.

Tajikistan has intensified security along its 1,400-kilometre frontier withAfghanistan following the attacks, while regional observers warn thatcontinued inaction could further strain Kabul’s relations with major powersinvested in Afghan stability.

Beijing has signalled that additional high-level discussions will follow asinvestigations proceed, with Chinese authorities closely monitoring theIslamic Emirate’s response to the latest bloodshed.

The incident comes amid growing international pressure on the Kabuladministration to curb the activities of various armed groups that continueto find sanctuary within Afghanistan despite repeated assurances ofimproved border control and counter-terrorism cooperation.
