International Labour Day; How Pakistan observed ILD

ISLAMABAD, May 1 (APP): The International Labour Day was observed Sunday in dignified manner across the globe including Pakistan under the theme "Celebrating the international labour movement".

The Labour Day aims to pay tribute to workers' sacrifices inachieving economic and social rights all over the world.

Seminars held in different cities to pay tribute tothose who laid down their lives in Chicago in 1886 for the rights of the labourers.

Labour unions throughout Pakistan celebrated and organised seminars, rallies and parades where union leaders delivered speeches emphasizing the history of Labour Day and its importance.

Pakistan's first labour policy was devised in 1972, in which May 1 was declared an official public holiday which also formulated

the creation of the Social Security Network, Old Age Benefit Schemes and Workers Welfare Fund.

Pakistan's constitution also contains various provisions and articles about labour rights.

A public gathering was organized in connection with  International Labour Day by Pakistan Worker Federation (PWF) with collaboration of CBA unions of All Pakistan Sports Board, Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Pakistan Television (PTV).

Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada said on the occasion the government was taking steps to resolve the issues being faced by labourers.

He said the government had increased basic pay of labourers as they were backbone of the country's economy.

The minister appreciated Islamabad's labourers, especially CDA workers for making it one of the most beautiful capitals of the world.

For well-being of labour class, the government always tried to facilitate them by raising their wage and providing all basic amenities.
