Iranian Border Guards Killed Ten Afghan Nationals at Border

ISLAMABAD: Iranian security forces gunned down ten Afghan nationals lateMonday night as they attempted to cross into Iran through the Mil 78 borderpoint in Farah province, the provincial security command confirmed onTuesday.

Mohammad Nasim Badri, spokesperson for the Farah Security Command, toldreporters that the victims were entering Iranian territory illegally whenborder guards opened fire without warning.

The killings took place near the Mil 78 area, a remote stretch of the945-kilometre Iran-Afghanistan frontier.Iranian authorities have remainedsilent on the incident, maintaining their usual practice of neitherconfirming nor denying border shootings involving Afghan nationals.

The latest bloodshed comes just weeks after Tehran intensified patrolsalong the frontier following complaints of illegal crossings and drugtrafficking. Afghan officials have lodged several protests this year oversimilar incidents, but Iran continues to treat the border as a free-firezone for its guards.

Taliban-led Afghanistan, already grappling with international isolation andmass poverty, now faces growing anger among families who rely onremittances from relatives working in Iran. The Farah governor’s office hasannounced it will pursue the matter through diplomatic channels, thoughpast complaints have yielded no accountability.
