New statement from top Turkish leader over Kashmir and Pakistan makes entire nation proud of Turkey

ANKARA – Turkey sees standing by Pakistan on the issue of Kashmir as itsduty, the Turkish parliament speaker said Tuesday.

Speaking at the opening of the parliament’s third legislative session ofthe year in the capital Ankara, Mustafa Sentop said: “Our nation has notforgotten the friendship of Indian Muslims,” referring to Indian assistanceto the Turkish War of Independence.

Jammu and Kashmir has been facing a clampdown since Aug. 5, when the Indiangovernment revoked Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which conferredit a special status.

Hundreds of people, mostly political leaders, have been detained orarrested by authorities since the Indian government made the move.

India and Pakistan hold Kashmir in parts and claim it in full. China alsocontrols part of the contested region, but it is India and Pakistan whohave fought two wars over Kashmir.
