Former French PM faces trial over scandalous military deal with Pakistan

PARIS – Former French PM faces trial over scandalous military deal withPakistan back in 1994 over the deal of augusta submarines.A French court has ordered former French Prime Minister Edouard Balladur tostand trial over the so-called “Karachi affair.” The scandal relates to acontroversial arms deal with Pakistan in the mid-1990s.

Former French Prime Minister Edouard Balladur is to face court overallegations that kickbacks from a submarine deal with Pakistan helpedfinance his 1995 presidential campaign, France’s top prosecutor saidTuesday.

The “Karachi affair” was a major scandal involving negotiations betweenthen Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and the French presidencies ofFrancois Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac for the sale of Agosta 90B-classsubmarines. A contract was eventually signed in 1994.

Balladur served as prime minister of France between 1993 and 1995 underMitterrand but lost his subsequent bid for the presidency to Chirac.
