WASHINGTON – Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi arrived in Washington tohold meetings with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National SecurityAdviser, Ambassador John Bolton.
The Foreign Minister arrived late Sunday from New York, where herepresented Pakistan at the 73rd UN General Assembly session. He alsoaddressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Saturday, where hehighlighted Pakistan’s efforts for peace and stability in the region andalso spoke about the ongoing violence in Kashmir.
The Foreign Minister is meeting US Secretary of State at the invitation ofextended by Secretary Pompeo during his recent visit to Pakistan, when twosides discussed ways and means to “reset” their ties, which are facingstrains after the US announced to suspend security aid to Pakistan.
According to the official sources, Foreign Minister Qureshi andSecretary Pompeo will discuss matters pertaining to bilateral relations aswell as situation in the region.Before his meeting with Secretary Pompeo, the Foreign Minister will have ameeting with US National Security Advisor, Ambassador John Bolton at theWhite House.
Earlier, talking to reporters at the end of the UN session, the ForeignMinister said that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights report on theIndian brutalities in the Occupied Kashmir has revived interest in thelingering dispute and the continuing human tragedy there has definitely“struck a sympathetic cord among world leaders”.The Minister stated that the UN report, which has provided evidence on thebrutalities of the Indian security forces, had in fact endorsed whatPakistan had been telling the international community about the situationthere.
President International Human Rights Council of Jammu and Kashmir,Dr. Syed Nazir Gillani lauded the speech of the Foreign Minister at the UNfor exposing Indian forces’ gross violation of human rights and atrocitiesin the Occupied Valley. He said that Mr. Qureshi effectively responded tothe statement by the Indian External Minister Shushma Swaraj and exposedthe state terrorism unleased by the Indian occupation forces there.
It may be mentioned here that the Minister had 54 interactions withdelegates to the UNGA, including 22 bilateral meetings and 11 multilateralmeetings during his six days stay in New York.
Besides meeting Secretary Pompeo and Ambassador Bolton, ForeignMinister Qureshi will also speak at the United States Institute of Peace(USIP) on the subject of Pakistan’s New Government Change or Continuity inForeign Policy on Oct. 3.The Minister is also scheduled to hold meetings with members of US Congress
