Indian Army opens fire on protesters in occupied Kashmir, dozens seriously injured

ISLAMABAD – In occupied Kashmir, at least one-and-half dozen peoplesuffered pellet and bullet injuries when Indian army and police personnelopened fire on protesters in Laddi area of Shopian district on Sunday.

Violent protests broke out in Laadi area of the district early morning whenpersonnel of Indian army launched a cordon and search operation in the area.

A strong protest was held in Kishtwar in support of Article 35-A of theIndian constitution. The protesters were led by Imam of Jamia MasjidKishtwar, Farooq Ahmed Kichloo.

Indian police arrested five persons under sedition charge for allegedlyraising anti-India slogans during a protest at Mendhar in Poonch district.

Chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai,Mirwaiz Hurriyat forum, Democratic Freedom Party and Hurriyat leaderMuhammad Iqbal Mir in their separate statements condemned the use ofdraconian law Public Safety Act as a political weapon against thefreedom-loving Kashmiri people.

Several journalist organizations including Washington-based Committee toProtect Journalists, Kashmir Working Journalist Association and KashmirJournalist Association in their separate statements demanded the release ofjournalist Asif Sultan from Indian police custody.

A small girl missing for the past 10 days was found dead in a forest areain Uri, Baramulla district, today.

Meanwhile, a book authored by a former Chief Justice of India has revealedthat Article 35A flows from an agreement in 1954 between India and Pakistan.

Senior lawyer and an eminent legal expert Syed Tasadduq Hussain in a mediainterview in Srinagar said that the Indian Supreme Court lacked inherentjurisdiction to hear the matter.
