Occupied Kashmir tense after the bloodiest day of the years

SRINAGAR: A complete shutdown marked by curfew and restrictions is beingobserved in occupied Kashmir today against the killing of nearly two dozenyouth by Indian troops on Sunday.

The shutdown is a part of the two-day strike call given by the jointresistance leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq andMuhammad Yasin Malik.

Indian troops on Sunday killed 17 youth, including 13 in siege and searchoperations and four in firing on protesters and funerals in Islamabad andShopian districts. More than 200 civilians were injured, many of them incritical condition.

As per the strike call, funeral prayers in absentia will be offered for themartyrs after Zuhr and Asr prayers today.

Apprehending large-scale protests, Indian authorities have put restrictionsat numerous places across the Kashmir Valley. Internet services continue toremain suspended on thesecond straight day today as well.

Moreover, commercial establishments and offices are also closed while theadministration has already ordered theclosure of all educational institutes.

All examinations scheduled for today were postponed at the KashmirUniversity, Islamic University and Central University. Public transport isalso off the road.

In Srinagar, strict restrictions have been imposed particularly in downtownareas. Barricades have been put in place to curb civilian movement whilesecurity forces personnel are presentin public enforcing the restrictions.

Similar reports are pouring in from other districts with south Kashmirremaining tense where thehuge toll of civilian killings took placeyesterday.
