KABUL – The US Army lost 14 service members in 2018 in Afghanistan, wherethe longest war in America’s history entered its 18th year in October.Relatively few of the 14,000 US troops in Afghanistan go into combat orserve near the front lines, in the framework of NATO’s training mission,Stars and Stripes reported.
“However, some do work within a separate US counterterrorism mission thattargets groups like Al-Qaida and the local Islamic State affiliate,” themilitary news site said. Many of the US military personnel who died inAfghanistan last year were from elite units.
The deadliest single incident happened in November, when four troops werekilled by a roadside bombing in Ghazni.
