SRINAGAR  – Indian forces in occupied Kashmir troubled the mourners in Muharram processions by throwing shells of tear gas and baton-charging people during Ashura.

On Sunday, the occupying forces enforced an unannounced curfew restricting all people to stay at homes. Police and other law enforcing units baton-charged the mourners and didn t allow them to observe the religious activities.

Apart from firing pellets and shelling, Indian forces took mourners into custody for an undefined period. The humanitarian violations continued even during the month of Muharram in which Muslims leave their homes to participate in religious rituals.

A number of people were reported injured due to firing of shells and pellets. Hurdles were placed at different points to stop processions from roaming around the city, and people were warned to stay at homes as in curfew.
