LONDON: The prestigious Oxford University while honouring famed singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has named its rehearsal hall after him. With this accolade, Rahat becomes the first South Asian artist to achieve the tribute.
According to the university’s website, a concert will be arranged by the Faculty of Music in honour of the Qawwali singer on May 25 at Oxford University’s Sheldonian Theatre. Rahat will perform at the fund raising concert alongside The Fusion Project, an ensemble of students from Oxford University and will be generously donating the proceeds to support the work of the Faculty of Music.
The programme will consist of a series of original fusion compositions and qawwalis arranged and produced by Rushil Ranjan, the lead singer and guitarist of the Fusion Project. Along with Rahat‘s impressive vocals they will feature western vocals, tabla drums and a bansuri.
The singer has announced to gift legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s harmonium to the university. Last year, Oxford University honoured Rahat with lifetime achievement award.
