ISLAMABAD: Jemima Goldsmith, the former wife of incarcerated ex-primeminister Imran Khan, has publicly contradicted Defence Minister KhawajaAsif’s assertion that Mr Khan’s sons would be permitted to meet theirfather.
In a statement posted on social media, Ms Goldsmith quoted Mr Asif’sSeptember 28 interview with journalist Mehdi Hasan in which the ministerclaimed the two boys had been offered a meeting under governmentguarantee.“They’re not even allowed to speak to him on the phone. No oneis,” Ms Goldsmith wrote, directly challenging the defence minister’sremarks and highlighting the complete communication blackout imposed on thePakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder.
Mr Khan has remained in Adiala Jail since August 2023 on multiple chargesthat his party maintains are politically motivated to keep him out ofpublic life.Family members, lawyers, and party leaders have repeatedlycomplained of severe restrictions on access, with even telephone callsreportedly prohibited in recent months.
Ms Goldsmith, who shares two sons with the former premier, has increasinglyused her international platform to draw attention to what she describes asunjust treatment of Mr Khan. Her intervention comes amid growing criticismof prison conditions and visitation policies applied to high-profilepolitical detainees.
Rights organisations have also raised concerns over prolonged isolation ofprisoners in politically sensitive cases. The public exchange underscorescontinuing tensions between the government and supporters of the jailedformer prime minister ahead of possible fresh legal proceedings.
