IHC issues notices to respondents in 10-cigarette packet case

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) served notices to respondents in a petition challenging the permission to private companies for manufacturing packets of 10 cigarettes each.

Justice Aamer Farooq of the IHC heard the petition filed by Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH) through its Secretary General Sanaullah Ghumman.

During the course of proceedings, the petitioner contended that Pakistan had signed an agreement with the World Health Organization (WHO), under which it could not allow manufacturing of a packet containing less than 20 cigarettes.

He said the ban on the 10-cigarette packet was aimed to stop smoking trend in the under aged youth.

He said the Ministry of National Health Services had also banned the manufacturing of 10-cigarette packet in Pakistan.

After hearing arguments, the court issued to the ministries of Health and Commerce, and cigarette manufacturing companies.
