US top envoy Zalmay Khalilzad held key meeting with PM Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD – United States top envoy Zalmay Khalilzad held key meeting withPM Imran Khan in Islamabad today.

The U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, AmbassadorZalmay Khalilzad, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Imran Khan onThursday.

The Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to remain engaged withthe U.S. and other stakeholders in facilitating the peace andreconciliation process in Afghanistan.

Recalling his recent interaction with President Donald Trump in Washington,the Prime Minister emphasized that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan was inthe interest of Pakistan as well as of the broader region. The PrimeMinister also expressed satisfaction at the evolving internationalconsensus and interest in fully supporting efforts to achieve long termpeace and stability in Afghanistan.

The Prime Minister underscored the need for inclusive intra-Afghannegotiations to evolve a road map for future of Afghanistan.

In the context of his recent visit to the United States, the Prime Ministerunderlined the importance that Pakistan attaches to a broad-based andenduring relationship between the two countries.

The Prime Minister stressed that the opportunities for an expandedbilateral economic relationship must be optimally utilized.

Earlier, Khalilzad arrived in Islamabad on an important visit to briefPakistani leadership about the progress with the Taliban.

US peace envoy went to the Foreign Ministry shortly after landing inIslamabad where he met the Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

According to the sources, Zalmay Khalilzad will inform the Pakistanileadership about the progress made so far with the Afghan Taliban. Duringhis visit, future affairs of Afghan reconciliation process will also beconsulted.
