ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has confirmed that Jaish-e-Muhmamad (JeM) chief MasoodAzhar is set to be designated as a global terrorist under the UnitedNations Security Council (UNSC) resolution 1267.
“Azhar is expected to be listed this evening by the UNSC sanctionscommittee,” a senior official has said.
The breakthrough comes after Pakistan and China dropped their objections tothe latest proposal put forward by the US, UK and France to designateMasood as terrorist.
The official said China withdrew its opposition after consultations withPakistan. He further added that Pakistan agreed to the listing after itsobjections were addressed.
Last month, Pakistan issued elaborate and comprehensive guidelinesdetailing steps to implement the UNSC resolution 1267 to curb terrorfinancing – in a major move that aims at seeking removal of its name fromthe Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) ‘grey list.’
Pakistan has been on the ‘grey list’ since June last year for failing tocurb terror financing.
