ISLAMABAD – Maryam Nawaz has been accused of embezzling funds of the ‘LetGirls Learn’ campaign in a petition filed in the Sindh High Court.
The court heard the case on Monday.
The federal government submitted its reply to the court in which it saidthat a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Pakistan and the USfor $70 million.
They agreed to work on different projects pertaining to the educationsector.
The US government had allocated $51 million for different projects underUSAid, while $19 million was released for the ‘Let Girls Learn’ Project.The project was launched by former US first lady Michelle Obama. In 2016,Obama and Maryam addressed a joint press conference and announced that theproject will aim to benefit 200,000 girls in Pakistan.
The petition has been filed by civil rights activist Bisma Naureen. Shesaid that a NAB inquiry should be initiated against Maryam over theallocation of funds. The petition also asks what authority Maryam visitedWashington with and met Obama. Maryam did not hold any official post at thetime, it points out.
