Why Sharjeel Memon was arrested and then released

ISLAMABAD: The former Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon arrived in Pakistan from Dubai on Saturday, ending his self-exile.

However, he was briefly detained by officials of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) at the Islamabad airport in connection with investigation into several corruption cases.

According to our correspondent, FIA briefly detained the former minister and later handed him over to NAB.

The NAB officials released him after nearly two-and-a-half hour interrogation.

Memon’s lawyer, Raja Shakeel Abbasi said that his client was released after he presented a document of pre-arrest bail to NAB director. The bail was granted on March 5.

The counsel said he also gave a written assurance to NAB that the ex-minister will surrender himself before Islamabad High Court on Monday.

The former Sindh Information Minister was accompanied by Mukesh Chawla, Imdad Pitafi, Fayyaz Ali Butt and Nawab Taimur Talpur when he was taken into custody by NAB officials and moved to an undisclosed location, sources said.
